Frequently asked questions

What happens in a Heart valve surgery?

Heart valve surgery is used to repair or replace diseased heart valves. Blood that flows between different chambers of your heart must flow through a heart valve. Blood that flows out of your heart into large arteries must also flow through a heart valve. These valves open up enough so that blood can flow through. They then close, keeping blood from flowing backward. There are 4 valves in your heart-- Aortic valve, Mitral valve, Tricuspid valve, Pulmonic valve. The aortic valve is the most common valve to be replaced. The Mitral valve is the most common valve to be repaired. Only rarely is the tricuspid valve or the pulmonic valve repaired or replaced. When one (or more) valve(s) becomes stenotic (stiff), the heart has to work harder to pump the blood through the valve. Valves can become narrow and stiff from infection (such as rheumatic fever or staph) and aging. If one or more valves become leaky, blood leaks backwards, which means less blood is pumped in the right direction. Based on your symptoms and the overall condition of your heart, your Cardiothoracic Surgeon may decide that the diseased valve(s) needs to be surgically repaired or replaced. Traditionally, open-heart surgery is used to repair or replace heart valves. This means that a large incision is made in the chest and the heart stopped for a time so that the surgeon can repair or replace the valve(s). Newer, less invasive techniques have been developed to replace or repair heart valves. Minimally invasive procedures make smaller incisions, and mean less pain afterward and shorter hospital stays. The diseased valve may be repaired using a ring to support the damaged valve, or the entire valve may be removed and replaced by an artificial valve. Artificial valves may be used. You and your Cardiothoracic Surgeon, will talk about the pros and cons of each type and what might be best for you.

What is Abdominal Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR)?

An aortic aneurysm is a bulging, dilation or ballooning in the wall of a blood vessel, usually an artery, that is due to weakness or degeneration that develops in a portion of the artery wall explains Dr. Vidyut Sinha, Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Just like a balloon, the aneurysm enlarges, stretching the walls of the artery thinner which compromises the artery walls ability to stretch any further. At this point, an aneurysm is at risk of rupturing and causing potentially fatal bleeding, just as a balloon will pop when blown up too much. The best method to repair an aneurysm depends upon several factors, including the location and shape of the aneurysm as well as the physical condition of the patient. Endovascular grafting is a minimally invasive method to treat an aortic aneurysm. Instead of an open aneurysm repair in which your chest and abdomen are surgically opened, your surgeon may consider a procedure called an endovascular aneurysm repair or EVAR. Endovascular repair of aneurysms does not require a large incision and has a substantially shorter recovery than the conventional open surgical approach. However, not all aneurysms are suitable for endovascular repair. What is Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting?

Dr. Vidyut Sinha, is one of the best Cardiothoracic Surgeon in Nashik explains that a coronary artery bypass graft or CABG is a surgical procedure used to treat coronary heart disease. It diverts blood around narrowed or clogged parts of the major arteries to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart. It diverts blood around narrowed or clogged parts of the major arteries to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart. Like all organs in the body, the heart needs a constant supply of blood. This is supplied by 2 large blood vessels called the left and right coronary arteries. Over time, these arteries can become narrowed and hardened by the build-up of fatty deposits called plaques. This process is known as Atherosclerosis. People with atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries are said to have coronary heart disease.Your chances of developing coronary heart disease increase with age. Coronary heart disease can also cause angina, which is chest pain that happens when the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart becomes restricted. While angina can often be treated with medicine, severe angina may require a coronary artery bypass graft to improve the blood supply to the heart. Another risk associated with coronary heart disease is the possibility of one of the plaques in the coronary artery rupturing or splitting, creating a blood clot. If the blood clot blocks the blood supply to the heart, it can trigger a heart attack. A coronary artery bypass graft may be recommended to reduce your chances of having a heart attack. What is Aortic surgery ? Can it be done with Minimal Invasive technique?

Dr. Vidyut Sinha , best Cardiothoracic Surgeon expertise in Aortic surgeries explains that it is done to repair the enlarged aorta or aortic aneurysm, the aortic valve, the holes in aortic valves and to replace the aortic valves. Aortic valve repair is done to treat leaking valves. Bicuspid aortic valve is repaired by reshaping the leaflets of the aortic valve such that the valve opens and closes completely. Aortic aneurysm is the enlarged portion of the ascending region of the aorta. If the aorta is enlarged by 4 or 5 cm in diameter, it is replaced at the time of aortic valve repair. Repair of tears of valve or holes ? The surgeon sews the tears or holes on the valve leaflets with tissue patches. Aortic valve replacement, the surgeon removes the damaged aortic valve and replaces it with either mechanical (plastic, carbon, or metal), biological valve (from animal tissues). Yes, Here, Minimal invasive surgery involves using endovascular techniques to place stent grafts within the aortic lumen to divert blood flow. Several techniques that are used in minimal invasive surgery or keyhole surgery are laparoscopy, endoscopy, percutaneous surgery, or robot-assisted surgery.
